The operation of the spray dryer is relatively simple. A slurry is atomized into the drying chamber in the form of droplets. When these droplets contact the warm gases, they dry to a powder. The hot gases, generated by either steam coils or a combustion furnace, enter the cylindrical drying chamber at various points, depending on the type of dryer.

The spray drying process involves the atomisation of a liquid into a spray of droplets and contacting the droplets with hot air in a drying chamber. Evaporation of moisture from the droplets and formation of dry particles proceed under controlled temperature and airflow conditions. The powder is discharged continuously from the drying chamber.

The temperature range of drying chambers is therefore generally between an ambient temperature of +5C as the lower limit and around 300C as the upper limit. In fact, there are already units which can go beyond that and enable temperatures below 0C. The sizes of drying chambers vary significantly between applications.
